About the producer
Kianamui station offers Rainforest certification and is equipped with eco-minded infrastructure.
Kianamui is one of the standout washing stations under the New Ngariama Cooperative Society in Kirinyaga County - a region known for producing some of Kenya’s most celebrated coffees. Located in the fertile central highlands of Mt. Kenya, the station benefits from ideal coffee-growing conditions: rich volcanic soil, elevations above 1,600 meters, and annual rainfall between 1,600-1,800 mm.
The cooperative has slightly over 1,800 members. Each farmer typically cultivates around 0.5 hectares, where coffee is grown alongside food staples like beans and potatoes and shaded with avocado, macadamia, and mango trees. Many also grow tea as a secondary cash crop, reflecting the diverse agroforestry systems in the region.
Kianamui has built a strong reputation for its environmental leadership. The station is Rainforest Alliance certified and has invested in wastewater soak pits that allow clean water to naturally filter back into the ecosystem - a rare but increasingly necessary feature as climate pressures mount in coffee-producing regions.
Processing at Kianamui is meticulous: cherries are handpicked and delivered within hours of harvest. After sorting, the cherries are pulped using an eco-pulper and fermented for 24 hours. Once the mucilage is broken down, the coffee is washed, soaked in clean water, and passed through grading channels based on density. It’s then dried on raised beds under shade netting to preserve quality.
Once the parchment reaches 12-14% moisture, it is moved to ventilated conditioning bins for further rest before delivery to the dry mill.
The variety mix is dominated by SL28 and SL34 - both known for their exceptional flavor potential. The care farmers give these delicate varieties results in clean, complex cups season after season.
